Recovered fiber Coordinator

 

 

Position Background and  Summary

The Environmental Paper Network (EPN) is currently seeking qualified applications for the position of Recovered Fiber Coordinator.  The successful applicant will have an opportunity to work with business, government, and no-profit leaders on an influential conservation project targeting the volume and quality of waste paper being recovered in North America in order to help support responsible paper markets.  

 

The EPN is a collaborative effort that is led by ten organizations (As You Sow, Borealis Centre for Environment and Trade Research, Conservatree, Co-op America, Dogwood Alliance, Environmental Defense, ForestEthics, Green Press Initiative, Markets Initiative, National Wildlife Federation)  The mission of the EPN is to provide international leadership and coordination to organizations aligned and working actively to advance the Common Vision for the Transformation of the Pulp and Paper Industry.  (www.environmentalpaper.org)

 

The primary emphasis of the EPN is to foster sustainable improvements within the paper production and consumption system. The Recovered Fiber Coordinator responsibilities will include:

 

Responsibilities

  • Research to determine regions and sectors with the greatest potential for increased collection in the U.S. and Canada
  • Outreach, education, and technical assistance to catalyze widespread inclusion of paper collection into municipal, educational, office building, and business hauling contracts in top 10 regions in the U.S. and in key Canadian population centers
  • Development of organizational capacity through the involvement of collaborative partners [EPA, National Wildlife Federation, recycling associations, U.S. Conference of Mayors, League of Cities, etc.] to assist with outreach, education, visibility, and follow-up
  • Engagement of educational stakeholders in the effort [National and local school board associations, National Principals Association, State PTA’s, Campus Ecology Program, American Association of Sustainability in Higher Ed., etc.]
  • Communication and education with key decision makers [local governments, haulers, building owners, etc.] to facilitate the use of optimal strategies for recovery [enhanced single-stream collection, etc.]

Qualifications

•     College degree, with ideally both business and not-for-profit experience

•     Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, excellent organizational and management skills and attention to detail 

•     Strong leadership skills, creative problem solver, outstanding collaborative skills and able to work with a minimum amount of supervision

•     Knowledge of environmental, paper and forest issues

•     Publicity knowledge and skills

•     Strong computer and website expertise

 

Reports to:                EPN Network Coordinator and Recovered Fiber Committee

Work Schedule:        Full Time

Salary:                       $32,000 to $40,000; commensurate with Experience

Benefits:                    Health insurance and 3 weeks vacation

Location:                   Flexible; preferred if candidate is in proximity to Asheville, NC
