IDENTIFYING PRIORITIES FOR ACTION
Innovation is a
necessary and vital part of any system whether it is an
ecosystem or an industrial sector. The paper that we touch every
day is a result of many variables, including market awareness
and demands, grassroots campaigns, government subsidies and
regulations, long-standing patterns of resource use, capital
investment, corporate social responsibility and lack thereof,
and much more.With a
system as complex as paper production and consumption, there are
many opportunities for advancing social and environmental
sustainability, including:
- market-based efforts to
increase demand and production of papers that are manufactured
with postconsumer recycled fibers, agricultural residues,
alternative crop fibers, and from credibly certified wood
fiber
- continued research and data
gathering
- identification of benchmarks
and indicators for industry improvements
- increased consumer awareness
- elimination of
government-based subsidies that support logging
