IDENTIFYING PRIORITIES FOR ACTION

Innovation is a necessary and vital part of any system whether it is an ecosystem or an industrial sector. The paper that we touch every day is a result of many variables, including market awareness and demands, grassroots campaigns, government subsidies and regulations, long-standing patterns of resource use, capital investment, corporate social responsibility and lack thereof, and much more.

With a system as complex as paper production and consumption, there are many opportunities for advancing social and environmental sustainability, including:

  1. market-based efforts to increase demand and production of papers that are manufactured with postconsumer recycled fibers, agricultural residues, alternative crop fibers, and from credibly certified wood fiber
  2. continued research and data gathering
  3. identification of benchmarks and indicators for industry improvements
  4. increased consumer awareness
  5. elimination of government-based subsidies that support logging

The list goes on. Check the site periodically and visit the what’s new or get involved sections to find out what the network and member organizations are doing
