 RESPONSIBLE FIBER SOURCING

In North America and most parts of the world, the fibers used to produce paper are sourced directly from trees and globally, over 70% of these trees originate from biodiverse forests as opposed to tree farms. A significant portion of this fiber is derived from endangered forests.

To further compound the impacts, in many regions, the paper industry is converting biodiverse and endangered forest habitats into single species tree farms that are intensively managed with herbicides and pesticides. In addition to soil and water toxicity issues and health impacts on local communities, it is estimated that tree farms host 90% fewer species than the forests that preceded them.

Given these negative impacts, the EPN is dedicated to advancing the principles for Responsible Fiber Sourcing as outlined in the Common Vision.
